Enjoy being alone but don’t be lonely!

“Sometimes, you need to be alone. Not to be lonely, but to enjoy your free time being yourself.”

We all like to interact with others a lot. But does that mean we have to hate being alone? Being alone and spending it productively is one of the best skills we learn over time. It will also give us time to analyze what we have done during the day in a productive manner.

Being alone needn’t mean loneliness

I am a person who is not used to being alone. I would always be surrounded by people and I enjoy this company. However, when everyone had gone out for a trip 4 years ago, I had the opportunity to stay alone in my house. I was not affected by it. I am bringing this point under consideration mainly because people thought how I will manage without any company, being the go-getter I am.

I should stress on one point here. Being alone need not always associated with being lonely. We can enjoy our own company, listen to music, get immersed with nature, and do our works diligently.  Have you ever heard the serene silence during the wee hours of the morning? Have you done exercises early in the morning and enjoyed it? Or have you felt the inner tranquility when no one is there in the house and you go to sleep after closing the doors? These are some of the best moments that we can enjoy in life.

Enjoy being alone

As long as being alone doesn’t have a negative psychological impact on us, we can enjoy being alone. It is not a rule that you have to be always surrounded by people. Those times when you get immersed in your work without being impacted by the external environment are also those that give meaning to your life.

Being alone doesn’t propagate against interacting with others

Just because I say that you have to enjoy being alone, it doesn’t mean that you have to be against interacting with others. Interaction and communication are what we do most of the times, and that is indeed good for our mental health. Agreed that meeting old friends after a long through an online meeting will do all the work in boosting your energy.  But still don’t feed the preconceived notion that being alone is not something good.

You have to nurture the relationship that you have with yourself

Sometimes you have to spend time alone so that you know more about yourself. Just enjoy your company Don’t feel disconnected from the world, which will in turn lead to depression and anxiety. Those who are lonely and away from the world are prone to get into a state of despondence because they don’t understand the value of being alone. Even I used to have a preconceived notion that being alone may lead to loneliness. But now I enjoy my inner company.

Loneliness in not permanent

Even if you feel lonely when you are alone or in company, remember that this too shall pass.  Analyze what is causing the loneliness viz., it can be not satisfied with your current situation or trying to improve yourself.

Being alone can be enlightening

Yes, if you make the best use of it. You can involve in activities that are purposeful and give meaning to your life. The key is focusing on what really matters to you and refocusing it with a fresh perspective if you are not satisfied with it. After all, life is about making simple changes in our mindset that will go a long way in improving your quality of life.
